The WWC Food Closet works in conjunction with Human Services at Westport Town Hall. When individuals/families who are in need contact Human Services, we fulfill their requests for food by providing them with bags of groceries and with Stop and Shop gift cards (for them to purchase meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and dairy products). When the bags are packed, the Food Closet workers deliver them to Town Hall. The recipients remain anonymous to us and are able to pick up their groceries and food cards at Town Hall.
We ask that WWC members contribute canned and packaged food goods throughout the year by bringing them to the office in the clubhouse. Every May, the US Postal workers hold a town-wide canned food drive in Westport; the WWC receives a huge number of food items from this campaign. Many WWC members volunteer to unload the postal trucks as they pull up to the clubhouse. In addition, we are fortunate to receive donations from annual food drives which local schools organize.
On a regular basis, our Food Closet staff of six to ten members sort and shelve the food that is contributed. Whenever we get a call from Human Services, we are then able to pack up bags with a good variety of edibles that will be appropriate and appealing for the folks who will be receiving this food.
