Holiday Toy Drive 2015

As the Woman's Club has done for many years, in conjunction with The Children's Connection, we are having our traditional Holiday Toy Drive for children who are neglected, abused and undergoing difficult times. Members are being asked to bring NEW UNWRAPPED gifts, as well as gift cards, cash and checks, at November's Club Day luncheon and throughout the month of November. A Worker's Coffee will be held on Nov. 3rd at 10:00 a.m. We
will meet in the auditorium of the clubhouse. This is open to
all members. It is great for the regular workers to meet each
other and refresh procedures or bring up any issues they have
encountered. It is also a good introduction for anyone who is
thinking about working at the Cottage. Refreshments will be
served. We hope to see you there.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, 5:30-7 pm, The Westport Woman's Club, at its historic Bedford Hall, 44 Imperial Avenue, will host the next Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce "Business After Hours." The event offers the social philanthropic Westport Woman's Club, a non-profit member of the WWCC, an opportunity to introduce local businesses to rental options of WWC facilities, which comprise Bedford Hall (c. 1866) with attached commercial kitchen, along with parts of the main clubhouse, the c.1881 Queen-Anne-style Sidney Watts House. It was a full house today at the Westport Woman’s Club “Club Day Luncheon” featuring the awarding winning fine art and editorial photographer Westporter Stacy Bass who started her presentation with a slide show of some of her truly beautiful photos from her current book, “Gardens at First Light.” She is known for capturing the essence of a place through an intuitive use of light, color and composition.IMG_1203

This is the 8th year that the BBQ Festival, a community-wide event, is being held, and the Woman's Club Food Closet has received generous grants over the years, totaling more than $12,000 (!) from the Downtown Merchants Association, the organizer of the event.

By volunteering at the Festival, we are expressing our appreciation and gratitude for the monies we have received, as well as showing support for a community event. If you are interested in helping out, there is a sign-up sheet at the Club or contact Audrey Rabinowitz to be assigned a shift.

In the Westport Woman's Club’s first-ever “live” Talk Show, "16 Minutes," award-winning fine art and editorial photographer Stacy Bass was interviewed by WWC president, Dorothy Curran during the Sept. 8th Club Day luncheon. Focusing on Stacy’s latest book, Gardens at First Light, this ground-breaking interview covered her Westport roots, family tree and the real dirt on garden photography.

Warm thanks to the "kids of all ages" in the greater Westport community who came out and supported Yankee Doodle Fair 2015, the non-profit Westport Woman's Club's signature fundraiser and Westport's favorite--and last remaining--carnival-style fair! Special thanks to those who came anyway on Sat. June 20, rode the rides and bought Raffle tickets (our "rain insurance") during the surprise day-long drizzle. (more…)

The program last night at the WWC was co-hosted by WWC Cultural Affairs, WWC Community Services, the Westport Public Library and TEAM Westport.

The movie, “The Good Lie” is the story of the ”Lost Boys of Sudan”. Thousands of boys and girls were rescued from the war having escaped the Soldiers who in many instances killed their parents and tried to kidnap the children for the Army. Those who were lucky enough to come to the United States have become U.S. Citizens and lead good lives. (more…)

The Yankee Doodle Fair will once again feature carnival rides and games from Stewart Amusements. The Expo Wheel is replacing the Ferris Wheel. Dizzy Dragon, Bumper Cars, Cobra Coaster, Tornado, Scrambler, Cliff Hanger, Super Slide, Whacky Shack Fun House, Merry Go Round, and Rip Cord are returning. A new updated spectacular version of the Ali Baba type ride named Rock Star and breath-taking Zero Gravity, are among others. Kiddie Rides include Quad Runner, Jumping Jumbos, Dinos and Frog Hopper. The Westport Woman’s Club Scholarship Committee awarded a total of $30,000 in scholarships to (8) Staples High School seniors and (1) Adult Woman’s scholarship at their May 22, 2015 Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

The scholarship awards are based on financial need and scholastic ability (no lower than 3.0 academic GPA). (more…)

The Westport Woman’s Club presented its 2015 Most Active Member Award to Karen Center at their May Club Day luncheon. The prestigious award, which honors exceptional volunteer service to the WWC and its charitable and social philanthropic initiatives, will result in the WWC on May 22 presenting one of its need-based college scholarships to a graduating Staples HS senior in Karen Center's name, then adding both names to the WWC Honor Roll plaque...

On Earth Day, at the head of the Earthplace trails system, the Westport Woman’s Club’s Community Services chair, Nancy Saipe, presented its annual $5,000 Ruegg Grant to Tony McDowell, EarthPlace executive director and Lisa Shufro, Trustee and Grounds chair. Also presenting were WWC president, Dorothy Curran, and Jo Fuchs-Luscombe, Mary Lee Clayton, and Arlene Thrope.

Reviving a long tradition after a 30-year hiatus, The Westport Woman’s Club again will host, May 2 and 3 only, an Art Show fundraiser showcasing top local talent. Featured artists include: Nina Bentley, Miggs Burroughs, Trace Burroughs, Vincent Calenzo, Jennifer Dewis, Helen Klisser During, Karen Ford, Tom Kretsch, Susan Malloy, Dayan Moore, Kathy Ross, Jill Sarver, Jo Titsworth and Cris Xavier. Multiple works by each of the 14 artists will be displayed in the Club’s newly renovated Bedford Hall and available for purchase.

The Westport Woman’s Club (est.1907) and the Westport Young Woman’s League (est.1956)  for the first time co-hosted a brown bag luncheon panel and roundtables discussion to explore answers to the question, “What is the role and future of our women’s volunteer organizations in the 21st century?” More than 65 women including the WWC and WYWL members, public sector partners, non-profit grant recipients and civic leaders attended in the newly renovated Bedford Hall at 44 Imperial Ave clubhouse that both organizations share. WWC Garden Department's featured speaker Cyrus Paktinat, award-winning floral designer, poet and owner of The Flowerfall of Westport, entertained his audience with demonstrations of his spring seasonal arrangements and decor for the home. Each week he goes to the NYC Flower Market to hand pick the flowers he uses in his beautiful creations. Cyrus's lovely work, history, awards, videos etc. can be viewed on-- theflowerfall.com--a must see.

The Curio Cottage Thrift Shop, at the Westport Woman’s Club, 44 Imperial Avenue, held its “Annual Tag Sale” on Friday and Saturday, March 6th and 7th.  All proceeds go to Fairfield County charities.

Merchandise included furniture, vintage collectibles, china, glassware, house wares, home accessories, hostess gifts, small appliances, linens, artwork, toys and games.

The Westport Woman’s Club has announced that proposals are now being accepted for its annual $5,000 Ruegg Grant.  Non-profit organizations are invited to submit their grant requests for projects that will make a continuing difference in our community.

This grant, established in 1995 by an endowment left to the club by former member Lea Ruegg, is given each year to deserving organizations in the arts, education endeavors, and health and safety-related programs.  Past beneficiaries include the Westport Police Department “Project Lifesaver”, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Connecticut, Hall-Brooke Behavioral Health Services, Nursing and Home Care, Westport Center for Senior Activities, Interfaith Housing Association, Mercy Learning Center, Toquet Hall, Clasp Homes, Westport Weston Family Y, Wakeman Town Farm and ITN Coastal CT. Gourmet Group had their annual "Sparkling" Holiday Party on December 16th.  This was a pot luck luncheon which included  hors d’oeuvres, desserts and sparkling wine   A wonderful time was had by all.

November’s WWC Guest Speaker, PAM ARCIERO spoke about various types of puppets and introduced club members to some of her puppet friends. Ms. Arciero performs for film, television and theater, notably as a principal puppeteer with Sesame Street and Between the Lions, performing numerous characters, most notably Grundgetta Grouch and Leona Lion. Pam has taught puppetry all over the world from New York to Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia to Denmark, and her love and joy of puppetry is contagious.

Making Strides against Breast Cancer Walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, was held at Sherwood Island State Park on Sunday, October 9th to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about the disease, and to help save lives.
