Food Drive 2011

The WWC Club Thanks the USPS and Westport Residents for Food Closet Donations

The annual U.S. Postal Service Letter Carrier’s Food Drive took place on Saturday, May 14. Beginning in the early afternoon, Postal trucks pulled up to their drop-off point at the Westport Woman’s Club to unload the bags of food collected from Westport residents as the Letter Carriers made their Saturday mail deliveries.  Volunteers from the WWC were busy for hours, assisting in carrying in bags, sorting items and then transporting food to the lower level of the clubhouse to stock their Food Closet.
Under the Leadership of the Westport Department of Human Services, the WWC Food Closet provides over 500 bags of non-perishable food and over $15,000 in grocery gift cards annually to Westport families in need.  The Food Closet, overseen by WWC Food Closet Co-Chairs Karen Center and Wendy McKeon, is stocked with donations from members, private companies and the community at large.  The donations received though the USPS drive play an important role in maintaining sufficient inventory to meet the need.  “Demand for this service has increased as more people are suffering during this economic downturn,” said Mary Vickery, President of the Westport Woman’s Club. “We are grateful that the USPS has chosen to support the WWC Food Closet, and really appreciate the generosity of the town residents in supporting this drive.”
